Try The Hook Triathlon.

Blackwater Triathlon Club member Marie MacAreetravelled to the Sunny South East at the weekend to take part in the Try TheHook Sprint Triathlon. This event, took place on Saturday the 24thof August on the stunning Hook Peninsula in Co. Wexford and consisted of a 750mswim, 20km cycle and a 5km run. The 750 metre swim took place in thehistoric Baginbun Bay, famous for being the site of the second wave of theAnglo-Norman invasion in early May 1170. There weren’t any Normans around thisweekend to cause any trouble for the 250 or so competitors that lined up inthree waves on the beach. The calm and sunny weather made the sheltered bay anideal location for a swim.  Swimmersentered the water in waves of eighty or so, and on completion of the swimheaded out on a 20 km cycle on country roads.  Apparently previous competitors haddescribed the cycle route as “very technical” with “a good mix of challenging inclines”.  For Marie, who has a couple of Ironman racesunder her belt, and whose idea of ‘fun’ on her summer holidays this year was totackle 1613 metre climb on the infamous col de la Colombiere, this was a nicegentle spin. The race finished with a nice 5km run before finishing in thelocal St Mogues GAA Grounds. Marie finished third in her age group category onthe day, crossing the line in 1:36:11. It was an excellent day out for her andeveryone else who took part. The event was very friendly and well managed withloads of spectators cheering everyone on.
