Moby Dick Kids Duathlon
The first Moby Dick Kids’ Duathlon took place inYoughal on last Sunday morning.TheYoughal based, South Coast Triathlon Club once again ran an excellent event withfour different races on offer to cater for children from 8 to 15 years of ageand over 150 children taking part on the day. Lovely weather greeted all thejunior athletes on the morning of the races. It was on the cool side but thesun shone throughout the morning. The Blackwater Triathlon Club was representedby Aimee Kearney who competed in the 8-9 age group, her very first duathlon. The8-9 age group started with a 400m run along the wooden boardwalk on Youghal beach. The children then came back to the transition area in Claycastle car park wherethey collected their bikes before setting off on a 1.2km cycle along the Youghalroad. The cycle was the most challenging section of the race as the start ofthe cycle was uphill, but it did give a chance for the kids to recover on theway back. The last section was an 800m run along the boardwalk and then back tothe car park. Aimee was the first of the children home that morning. Clearlythe future of the Blackwater triathlon Club is in safe hands. All the kidstaking part received lovely woolly hats at the finish line. This was a reallyfun, safe and well organised event and well worth the effort of getting upearly on a Sunday morning. (Especially for Aimee’s mum, Michelle, who hadtravelled to Clare on Saturday to take part in the Cliffs of Moher charitycycle). Well done to South Coast Triathlon Club, who are continuing theirrecord of promoting junior athletes, and to all the children who took part onthe day. Hopefully they’ll all be competing in many more events as the years goby.
