Island Swim, Limerick

On Saturday the 12th September three of the club’s better swimmers, Julian Boeg, Frank Hallissey and Stephen Dalton, travelled to Limerick to take part in the Island Swim. Organised by Limerick’s Narwhals swimming club, this 3.8km swim starts at The Hunt Museum and and takes the swimmers around King’s Island. The swim this year was held in aid of ICRR (Air Ambulance), and other donations were made to The Hunt Museum, Curragower Boat Club and Athlunkard Boat Club.

The swimmers departed in pods of 15 approximately a minute apart to ensure proper social distancing. The conditions on the day were ideal and the water was nice and warm. There were 91 swimmers in the river, assisted by 15 kayakers, 5 motor boats and 6 SUPs. There were also 10 marshals on the land side to make sure that everything went smoothly, and above all, safely. There was a nice tidal assistant up the Abbey River as they started out and a push from the Shannon on the way back down. A head wind for the last few hundred metres made the finish of the swim a bit of a challenge. Well done to all who took part on the day. Definitely one for next year’s calendar.
