The Tribesman Olympic Triathlon.

Blackwater Triathlon Club’s Brighid Liston, Mick Mulcahy and Adam Blaikock ventured up the west coast last weekend to take part in the second annual running of the Tribesman Olympic Triathlon on Saturday the 15th of July. This event, which is organised by Galway Triathlon Club consists of a beautiful 1500 metre down river swim in the pristine waters of The River Corrib followed by a Challenging 40km bike route through the town of Moycullen and up the infamous Moycullen Hill. The race then finishes with a scenic 10km run consisting of 2 loops around the grounds of NUIG and along the banks of the Corrib. Unfortunately for the participants, while we were being roasted in the sunny conditions down south, the people of Galway had much less appealing conditions to deal with. Saturday morning in Galway was wet and windy as the 150 competitors lined up to start the swim. Despite the weather the water conditions for the swim were very pleasant. The race organisers had described the 40km bike course as “Fast and flat, except for the slow hilly bits”, and this proved to be the case. Despite the slow, hilly bits and the relatively high winds the road surface was excellent and it turned out to be a fast bike course. The race finished with a flat and scenic two loops through the grounds of NUIG. This was a well organised and very enjoyable race, as is reflected in the fast times achieved on the day. The BTC contingent were all very pleased with their results. Mick finished in 2:29:53, Adam in 2:33:49 and Brighid in 2:57:19. All excellent times and a worthwhile trip to the City of Tribes. Well done to the lads and everyone else who took part in the event.
