The Edge Sport Blackwater Aquathlon.
The Blackwater Triathlon Club Aquathlon 2017 took place in Fermoy on the evening of Wednesday the 12th of July. 84 people took part in the race on a warm sunny evening. The race consisted of a 750 metre swim in the Blackwater River, followed by a 6km run. Participants entered the water down by the rowing club using one of the new slipways built as part of the flood relief scheme. They then swam upriver for 300 metres before turning for home and exiting on the opposite bank and making their way to the transition area over in the park. The run was 3km out and back on the Ballyhooley road. The race was won by local athlete, Rory Sexton, in a very impressive time of 31:16.2. He was closely followed home by James Mintern and Mark Dolan, with last year’s winner Dave Richardson finishing fourth. In a repeat of last year’s results, the first lady home on the evening was Lorna Wolfe in a very impressive 36:28.7, closely followed by Joyce Wolfe. Unlike last year though, the third place lady home wasn’t a member of the Wolfe family, but Sarah Whelan. We also had a good contingent from the club taking part on the day, many of whom also helped out setting things up before donning their race gear.Well done to everybody who took part on the day. Credit must also go to the organisers and the large numbers of volunteers who made sure that once again the race ran smoothly and safely. Thank you to the Triathlon Ireland TO, The Blackwater Sub Aqua Club, Fermoy Rowing Club, and the Fermoy office of the County Council and members of the local community for all the support to make the race an enjoyable event for all. Special thanks to our sponsors, The Edge Sports. Thanks also to all the club members and their friends and families who did the hard work that made the race possible. We hope to see you all again next month for the Edge Sport Blackwater Triathlon.
