Garnish Swim

While the majority of us wouldn't even contemplate getting into a warm bath without the heating on full in November our swimmers are a different breed. On Saturday 13th November a contingent of open water swimmers from Blackwater Triathlon Club headed to Glengarriff, to take part in the 10th BISRA GaddinAbtGarnish 21.2 swim.  With proceeds from the swim going to Bantry Lifeboat.

Originally three distances were available on the day 5km, 3km and 1km swim.  Unfortunately, due to the drop in water temperatures the decision was made to cancel the 3km and 5km swims.  Instead, a 2.5km swim was available swimming inside the island and 1km swim remained the same.

Blackwater Triathlon Clubs crew on the day were Brendan Holland and his wife Vanessa, Dave Mulcahy, Declan O’Keeffe, Frank Hallissey, Jim Crowley, Johnny Geary, Mona Sexton, Owen O’Keeffe, Sinead Sheridan and Stephen Dalton.

With the option of skins or wetsuits a lot of our swimmers swam in skins. Overall our swimmers said it was a fab swim with excellent conditions and a well-marked out course.  Water temperatures on the day were a balmy 12 degrees and the water was flat calm.  It wasn't a timed event but some great times were achieved on the day.

Well done to all our swimmers and to our three Kayakers Kay Quirke, Julian Boeg and his daughter Alice.
