Dungarvan Triathlon

The Dungarvan Triathlon took place on Saturday the 7thof September.Therewere two races taking place on the day, an Olympic distance event and a sprintrace. The Olympic distance consisted of a 1500m swim, a 40km cycle and a 10kmrun. This is a very popular event and on the day over 300 athletes started therace, including BTC members Brian Baker, Donal Murphy, Dave Murphy, Gearoid Murphy, PeterO’Brien, Eleanor Fennessey, Gina Lyons and Anthony O'Brien. For Donal and Anthony thiswas a first attempt at the Olympic distance. Weather conditions on the day werenear perfect. The sea was flat and calm for the swim section, albeit a littleon the cool side. However, once the swimmers got started they soon warmed up. Thecycle took place over rolling hills and by the end of that the triathletes werewell warmed up. The 10km run to finish the day took the runners out along thecoast and the local greenway, but it was mostly flat and supporters turned outin good numbers to cheer the athletes along. Dave Murphy was the first of theBTC contingent home, crossing the line in 2:33:19, closely followed by Gearoid Murphy in 2:34:39. Donal Murphy had a great debut Olympic race, finishingin a very impressive 2:39:40. Brian Baker was once again on the podium as he crossedthe line in 2:40:13 claiming second place in his age group category on the day.He was just a couple of minutes ahead of Peter O’Brien who came home in2:42:54.  Eleanor Fennessey was next homefor the BTC finishing in 2:55:23, followed by Gina Lyons and Anthony O'Brien in2:58:45 and 3:07:54 respectively. The event itself was very well organised, especially consideringthat between the sprint and Olympic events on the day they had close to 500athletes competing. Well done to everyone who took part on the day and to thefolks in Dungarvan for pulling it off.
