The Waterford AC Half marathon took place on Saturday the 1st of December. Based around the WIT Sports Campus in Carriganore on the outskirts of the city, this is a very popular event attracting over 2000 athletes of every ability to the City on the day. The event serves as a fund raiser for the Waterford Athletic Club around the attracts over 2000 runners and joggers to Waterford. The event serves as the Waterford Athletic Club’s main fundraiser, with money raised on the day going towards the development of their juvenile club and the promotion of athletics in the city. Over 2,300 runners took to the start line at 10 o’clock on Saturday morning in near perfect conditions for the race. Amongst them were five members of the Blackwater Triathlon Club, possibly working up an appetite for our Christmas party later that evening. The first BTC member home on the day was Peter O’Brien, crossing the finish line in a very impressive 1:24:59, followed just over two minutes later by Conor Bartley in 1:27:02. Marie MacAree, having recovered from her recent Ironman exertions in Barcelona, came home in 2:15:09, with Kay Quirke just behind her in 2:17:31. Conor McCarthy also had a good day out, finishing in 2:20:10, a full 9 minutes off his previous half marathon time. The race was very well organised and supported and the athletes were treated to some traditional Waterford hospitality afterwards with plenty of coffee and a few blaas. Well done to everyone who took part on the day.
