The 13th edition of Tri Athy took place in Athy, Co. Kildare on Saturday the 1st June. This is a very popular popular event on the tri calendar and attracts a large number of athletes each year. The event offers four different options to triathletes, I-Try, Sprint, Olympic and Double Olympic. Blackwater Tri Club was represented on the day by Gearoid Murphy and Kevin O’Farrell who both participated in the Olympic Triathlon. Forecast on the day was overcast but remained dry throughout the event. The event started with a 1500m rolling start swim on the River Barrow, 600m upstream around a buoy and 900m downstream under the Duke Street Bridge to the exit ramp. The swim was followed by a 40km cycle on fully closed roads with a strong headwind on the return leg. The final segment of the event was a 10km run which consisted of two laps along the Carlow Road around the canal before crossing the The Horse Bridge to the finish line. Gearoid completed the Olympic Tri in 18th position overall and 3rd in age category with a time of 2:24:28. Kevin, completing an Olympic for the first time,completed the event in 2:53:16. Both lads would highly recommend the event and plan to participate again next year.
