On Saturday the 6th of July the annual Ring of Kerry charity cycle took place, starting and finishing in the scenic Kerry town of Killarney.. Over more than 30 years the cycle has attracted hundreds of thousands of participants and raised millions for local charities. Among the 8,000 or so cyclists that took part in the 175-kilometre sportive this year were three Blackwater Triathlon Club members, Annemarie Leahy, Kay Quirke and Barney Kiernan. For Barney and Annemarie this was their first attempt at the distance. Conditions on the day were a little overcast, but dry, near perfect conditions for the cyclists. As usual there was much craic to be had along the route with fellow cyclists and the marshals. The organisation of this event is first rate and the number of volunteers ensuring that participants are safe and well fed all along the route is very impressive. All three of the BTC crew managed to get through the route safely and really enjoyed their day. This is definitely an event that should be on everybody’s bucket list.
