On Sunday the 20th of May, the fourth annual Blackwater 10 mile road race in Clondulane, near Fermoy, took place. Despite the threat of wet weather the day stayed dry and warm, albeit a little breezy. Based around the picturesque village of Clondulane, the race is organized by the Blackwater 10 Race Association, a non-profit group, and proceeds from the race benefit the chosen charity partners, Breakthrough Cancer Research and Clondulane National School. Blackwater Triathlon Club member, Eddie O’Brien, is one of the main organisers of the race and was delighted with the turnout this year. A total of 231 people finished the race on Sunday. The race, which was very well supported by the people of Clondulane on the day was a challenging course,  including 413 metres of climbing. John Meade of St. Finbarr’s AC made it four wins in a row, repeating his success of the last three years to come home first in a time of 56:28. The first lady home was Joan Ennis in a time of 1:09:23. The first Blackwater Triathlon Club member home was Peter O’Brien in a time of 1:09:55, over a minute and a half faster than last year’s time. The next BTC member home was Adrian Collins in 1:11:27 followed by Ashleigh Byrne in a personal best time of 1:18:01 and Eddie O’Brien in 1:19:19. Eddie was acting as a pacer on the day for the 1 hour 20 minute time. Deidre Morrison came home just a few seconds behind Eddie in 1:19:37, followed by Ann Lyons in 1:21:52 and Kenneth Power in 1:25:24. Bernard “Barney” Kiernan finished in 1:29:56, with Conor McCarthy crossing the line in 1:49:28 and Karen McNamara home in 1:52:31.  All in all it was a good day out for the club and once again the general consensus was that this was a very well run event with much credit due to the organisers, stewards and people of Clondulane on the day. Definitely one for next year’s race diary.
