Busy Weekend for Blackwater Triathlon Club Swimmers

Last weekend was very busy for the BTC swimmers. On Fri 5th October Mary Collins and Frank Hallasey took part in the Lough Hyne night swim. Over 100 swimmers swam with light sticks on their heads accompanied by a magical light display from the little creatures in the water.  On Sat 6th, the annual Sherkin to Baltimore 2K Swim took place.  This is a very popular event in the open water swim calendar and 300 swimmers took part on the day. The swimmers were transported by ferry to Sherkin, where they lined up up together on the slipway before entering the water and swimming back the 2km to Baltimore. It's advertised as just a swim but to some people it's a race.  Then, completing an eventful weekend for the swimming enthusiasts in the club, Sunday 7th October saw the Sandycove Island race take place. Bad weather had forced the organisers to cancel this popular race first time around this year and conditions on the morning were once again not ideal. A decision was eventually made to proceed with the race, but for safety reasons the swimmers didn’t follow the usual route, around the island, but kept inside the island and swam around buoys instead.  The first leg of the race was very rough but the rest was perfect as it was sheltered by the island.  There were 150 swimmers in the event and the Blackwater competitors had a good day out with Dave Crowley and Declan O’Keeffe winning their age categories. Bill McAuliffe came third in his age group, Dave Mulcahy was fifth in his and Jim Crowley finished seventh in his age category. Well done to everyone who took part on the day. Special mention must go to Dave Mulcahy, who has taken part in all 23 of the Sandycove races.
