Busy Weekend for Blackwater Triathlon Club Swimmers.

The weekend of the 11 th to the 13 th of October was a busy weekend for some of the Blackwater Triathlon Club’s swimmers as they headed down to West Cork for some end of season open water swims. The “Baltimore Wet Weekend” in aid of the Wild Atlantic Pool in Baltimore a community run facility for all, consisted of a weekend of swimming in the Beautiful Village of Baltimore and surrounding areas. The weekend started with a night swim on the Friday Night in Lough Hyne, which consisted of approximaterly 500m of swimming in the amazing bioluminescence of Lough Hyne. The main event of the Weekend was the Sherkin Island 2k swim on Saturday the 12 th . This is a very popular event in the open water swim calendar and approximately 400 swimmers took part on the day. The swimmers were transported by ferry to Sherkin, where they lined up together on the slipway before entering the water at 4pm and swimming back the 2km to Baltimore. It's advertised as just a swim but to some people it's a race, even though it’s not officially timed. There were both wetsuit clad and skins swimmers taking part and water temperatures were a positively balmy 12 degrees. Blackwater Triathlon Club was represented by Frank Hallissey, Ciara MacCallum and Mary Collins. Another Blackwater alumnus, and channel swimmer, Owen O’Keeffe also took part. There was a lovely atmosphere to the whole event and the Blackwater crew really enjoyed themselves. Then on Sunday the 13 th , it was time for the final swim of the weekend as the swimmers took to the water once again for the Spanish Island swim, a 4k circuit of Spanish Island In the Beautiful Baltimore Harbour. This swim was limited to 100 intrepid souls and amongst them were four of Blackwater Triathlon Club’s finest. Frank Hallissey, fresh from his 2km warm up swim on Saturday, was once again to the fore. This time he was joined by two more of the club’s perennial water babies, Dave Mulcahy and Stephen Dalton, and one of our newer members, Justin Ryan, also took on the challenge. Conditions were good on the day, although the water was described as ‘fresh’ by some of the participants. For Frank, who is in the habit of indulging in the odd ice-mile swim, it was positively bath like. Once again all of the participants really enjoyed the swim and the post race refreshments that followed. Definitely an event to aim for next year. The weekend marked the end of the open water swimming season for most people, although there are many who will swim all the year round.
